Chapter 15 - The tablet problem

Diane’s defense filed a motion challenging use of the videos I downloaded from her tablet.

Expected.

My copies were excluded from certain evidentiary use until authenticity and acquisition issues were resolved.

Then it became largely irrelevant.

Police had obtained the same media independently through the cloud-service warrant.

Metadata.

Hash values.

Original files.

The prosecution did not need my downloads.

Dana told me:

“You got lucky.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“If there had been no cloud warrant route, your decision could have complicated this much more.”

I nodded.

She continued:

“You were trying to become investigator because being father felt powerless.”

That hurt because true.

I had wanted to do something.

Find.

Collect.

Prove.

But after a crime, the desire to regain control can turn ordinary people into bad evidence handlers.

I stopped.

No more logging into accounts.

No searching Diane’s house.

No calling witnesses to compare stories.

If somebody contacted me, I forwarded to counsel.

Boring.

Effective.
