Chapter 9 - The consultant who told her no

Wilhelmina hired child-environment consultant Dr. Paige Monroe, an environmental psychologist who advised on schools and residential design.
Paige was not Amity’s therapist.
Never met Amity.
Wilhelmina sent:
Floor plans.
Security concerns.
General descriptions.
Then asked:
“Can a child become psychologically attached to a dangerous home?”
Paige answered:
“Yes, children can attach to familiar environments even when adults identify objective risks.”
Normal.
Then:
“Can controlled stress demonstrate whether a space is worsening anxiety?”
Paige:
“Not outside a proper clinical context, and certainly not by intentionally distressing a child.”
Clear.
Wilhelmina:
“What if the stressor is part of realistic emergency preparation?”
Paige:
“Emergency drills should be developmentally appropriate, predictable, brief, and nonpunitive.”
Then:
“Cold exposure?”
Paige:
“No.”
There.
Wilhelmina stopped consulting her.
Then hired no child professional at all.
She built the protocol herself from executive-security materials written for adults.
The Compliance sequence included cold water because one article discussed stress inoculation for adult tactical personnel.
She turned that into punishment for an eight-year-old.
No licensed professional recommended it.
Then message to her assistant:
If she keeps saying Greyhaven scares her, we finally have something objective.
Assistant:
Because of threats?
Wilhelmina:
Because of all of it.
Then:
Briar needs to feel like relief.
There.
That was enough to suspect.
Not yet enough for the full central secret.
The property documents and money flow would confirm that in Chapter 10.
Then Meridian found something hidden in its renovation portal.
Cross Atelier had uploaded a Notice of residential unsuitability as part of lien correspondence.
Attached:
Photographs of water intrusion.
Old electrical panels.
Security sight lines.
And a summary:
Minor beneficiary demonstrates escalating anxiety associated with Greyhaven environment.
Who authored that?
Wilhelmina.
Qualifications?
None.

She was trying to put Amity’s fear into a property file.
That was when the trustee’s counsel stopped treating this as merely construction litigation.
