Chapter 26 - The bucket

Two months after the final property settlement, the laundry-room staff replaced old utility containers.
Maria found one silver ice bucket behind a cabinet.
Same model.
She called me before throwing it away.
I almost said:
Destroy it.
Then Amity walked in.
Saw it.
Stopped.
Maria froze.
I crouched.
“You okay?”
Amity stared.
“That one?”
“Maybe.”
“From Willa?”
“Probably.”
She touched the rim with one finger.
Then:
“Can I have it?”
I hesitated.
“For what?”
“Flowers.”
Of course.
We washed it.
Amity carried it outside.
Filled it with water.
Not ice.
Cut hydrangeas with Maria.
Placed them inside.
Blue.
White.
Purple.
Then set bucket on the patio table.
No ceremony.
No therapist watching.
No family speech.
Just flowers.
Then my lawyer called.
Wilhelmina had completed the final release paperwork.
Every Greyhaven claim dismissed.
Cross Atelier payment cleared.
Fee sanction settlement cleared.
Furniture pickup complete.
No appeal.
No property proceeding remained.
I looked at the flower bucket.
Then at Amity.
She was arguing with Maria about whether purple hydrangeas were actually blue.
The house was hers in trust.

The fear was not.
That was the last thing Wilhelmina lost.
