Chapter 5 - The staff had been afraid to call me

Maria Velez, Greyhaven’s house manager, sat across from me.

She had worked for Celeste before our marriage.

She had known Amity since birth.

“Why didn’t you call?”

Her eyes filled.

“I almost did.”

“When?”

“The second bucket.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Ms. Cross said it was a security drill you approved.”

“Cold water?”

“She said Amity needed to learn to recover from shock.”

I closed my eyes.

Then Maria:

“I told Rafael’s deputy.”

Who?

Thomas Kell.

He handled residential operations when Rafael traveled with me.

Thomas later admitted Wilhelmina had shown him a written protocol.

Signed:

L. Falcone

Not a wet signature.

An electronic image.

Document title:

Child emergency resilience authorization

I had never signed it.

Had I signed something similar?

Yes.

A general travel emergency sheet.

Wilhelmina or someone had lifted my signature.

That became a separate forensic issue.

Then why did Maria continue?

“Ms. Cross told me I would be fired if I interfered.”

Could she fire Maria?

Under household staffing authority, Wilhelmina had been allowed to recommend staffing changes but final termination required Thomas or me.

Maria did not know the distinction.

Again:

Authority had become fog.

Then meals.

No starvation.

Amity ate normally.

Wilhelmina’s punishment focused on laundry-room “cold resets.”

Maria had observed Amity come upstairs wet once.

Wilhelmina said:

“She spilled a bucket.”

Maria believed until Amity whispered:

“I was bad.”

That should have triggered a call.

Maria admitted it.

No need make staff flawless.

Then my own travel.

I had been gone:

Eight days in June.

Six in July.

Four in August.

Eleven this time.

Too much?

Maybe.

Amity had stable caregivers.

School.

Aunt Cassandra Falcone, my younger sister, spent some weekends.

Travel alone was not neglect.

But I had given Wilhelmina too much unverified control because she made the household easy.

That was my failure.

Then Amity’s notebook.

The one from utility cabinet.

Not Amity’s handwriting.

Wilhelmina’s.

Entries:

Dropped towels. Refused correction. Reset 12m.

Cried for father. Reset extended 8m.

Would not repeat emergency address. Cold reset.

Left safe position during drill.

Then:

Still associates Greyhaven with Dad rather than safety.

I read that twice.

Why would those be different?

Then one later entry:

Briar may solve attachment problem faster than drills.

Lake Briar.

The property Wilhelmina owned.

The mansion threat and the cold water were beginning to connect.
