Chapter 24 - Wilhelmina’s last counterattack

Wilhelmina appealed one part of the civil ruling.
Not the whole case.
She challenged the fee sanction attached to the overstated lien.
Argument:
Her attorneys had included disputed categories in good-faith belief they were lienable.
The appellate court did not immediately reverse.
Instead encouraged settlement while appeal pending.
Meridian offered:
Reduce fee sanction from $74,000 to $58,000 if Wilhelmina dismissed appeal and released lien-related claims permanently.
She accepted.
Why?
Cost.
Finality.
Her own lawyers told her chances uncertain.
That was her last attack on Greyhaven.
No new document.
No secret deed.
No surprise cousin.
She signed.
The property file finally became boring.
I framed nothing.
Then Meridian trustee asked:
“Do you still believe Greyhaven serves Amity?”
I looked toward the gardens.
“Yes.”
“Because she owns it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she lives here comfortably again.”
“If that changes?”
“We reconsider.”
Good.
Trust property exists for beneficiary.
Not ancestral ego.

If Amity someday hated Greyhaven for reasons unrelated to Wilhelmina, we would not force her to stay because Celeste loved the place.
That was something I had to learn too.
