PART 6

Ashley began crying before anyone spoke to her.

That surprised Jade.

She had imagined the woman as cruel.

Maybe she was.

But in that room, wearing Jade’s ivory coat over another pregnancy, Ashley suddenly looked less like a mistress and more like a girl who had believed a man because his lies made her feel chosen.

Harrison did not soften.

“Why are you wearing my granddaughter’s coat?”

Ashley looked down as if seeing it for the first time.

Her hand went to the pearl buttons.

“He gave it to me.”

Jade closed her eyes.

The coat had been hanging in her bedroom closet when she left for the hospital.

Weston had taken it while she was recovering.

Then dressed his pregnant mistress in it.

The cruelty was so intimate it felt unreal.

Ashley removed the coat with shaking hands.

“I didn’t know it was custom.”

Jade looked at the small stitched lining.

J.W.

Her initials stared back.

Ashley saw them and began to sob harder.

“I didn’t know.”

Jade said nothing.

Not because she forgave her.

Because she had no space left inside her body for another wound.

The attorney collected the divorce papers.

The security chief positioned himself between Weston and the bed.

Weston tried to straighten his suit.

“I demand to speak to hospital administration.”

Harrison looked at him.

“You are speaking to the man who owns the network.”

Weston’s mouth opened.

Ashley whispered, “What?”

Harrison continued.

“This hospital.”

“The neonatal wing.”

“The research fund keeping that monitor beside my great-grandsons’ bed.”

He stepped closer.

“All under Whitmore oversight.”

Weston looked toward Jade.

“She never said.”

Jade’s voice was exhausted.

“You never asked who I was when I stopped being useful.”

That sentence landed hard.

Even Ashley looked down.

Harrison pointed to the floor where the papers had fallen.

“You brought custody threats into my hospital.”

“You brought your mistress into my granddaughter’s recovery room.”

“You wore her maternity coat like a trophy.”

“And you spoke about my great-grandchildren like defective merchandise.”

Weston’s face darkened.

“You don’t know what she’s like.”

Harrison’s voice cut through him.

“I know what you are.”

The security chief stepped forward.

“Mr. Vale, you and Miss Ashley will leave this room now.”

Ashley whispered, “I want to go.”

Weston turned on her.

“You stay where I tell you.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

Jade saw it.

So did the security chief.

That sentence revealed too much.

Ashley went pale.

The nurse beside her quietly took the ivory coat from her hands and folded it over a chair near Jade’s bed.

Harrison looked at Ashley.

“You may leave voluntarily.”

Then he looked at Weston.

“He may not.”

May you like

Weston’s confidence finally broke.
