part 2

PART 2
Weston had arrived twelve minutes before Harrison.
He did not knock.
That was what Jade remembered first.
Not Ashley.
Not the papers.
Not even the cruelty.
The door simply opened, and her husband walked into the NICU room like her recovery belonged to his schedule.
Jade had been trying to feed one twin with a tiny bottle while a nurse adjusted the monitor on the other.
The babies were five days old.
Born at thirty-one weeks.
Too small.
Too early.
Too loved to be treated like inconvenience.
Weston stood at the foot of the bed in a black suit, clean-shaven, composed, carrying a leather folder.
Behind him stood Ashley.
Pregnant.
Blonde.
Wearing Jade’s custom ivory maternity coat.
Jade had recognized it instantly.
The coat had been made for her second trimester.
Soft wool.
Pearl buttons.
A stitched lining with her initials hidden inside.
J.W.
Jade Whitmore.
Ashley wore it open over a fitted dress, her hand resting on her own belly as if the hospital room were a stage.
Jade looked at the coat before she looked at Weston.
“That’s mine.”
Ashley’s eyes flickered.
Weston answered for her.
“You left it at the house.”
“I left everything at the house because I went into premature labor.”
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t make this dramatic.”
A nurse turned sharply from the monitor.
Jade felt shame rise in her throat.
Not because she had done anything wrong.
Because cruel people always know how to make pain look like performance.
Weston stepped closer and dropped the leather folder onto the blanket near her knees.
Divorce papers spilled out.
The baby in her left arm startled.
Jade pulled both twins closer.
“Weston…”
He pointed at the documents.
“Sign them.”
The nurse said, “Sir, this is not appropriate.”
Weston ignored her.
“She needs to understand reality.”
Jade looked at him.
“Reality?”
“You had two premature babies.”
His mouth twisted.
“My family does not need this chaos.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Jade stared at the man who had held her hand through fertility appointments.
The man who had kissed her stomach when the ultrasound showed twins.
The man who now looked at his sons as if they were defective contracts.
Ashley whispered, “Weston, maybe not here.”
He snapped, “This is exactly where.”
Then he said the sentence that made Jade reach for her phone.
“She has nobody.”
Jade’s hand shook as she unlocked the screen.
Weston laughed.
“Who are you calling?”
She looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
“My grandfather.”
He smiled.
Not because he believed her.
May you like
Because he did not.
