PART 1

“He threw divorce papers onto the mother of his premature twins… then her billionaire grandfather arrived and slapped him in front of everyone.”

The slap cracked through the private NICU room before anyone remembered how to breathe.

Weston Vale’s head snapped sideways.

The divorce papers bent in his hand.

Ashley gasped behind him, one hand on her pregnant belly, the ivory maternity coat she was wearing suddenly looking less elegant and more stolen.

Jade sat on the hospital bed with two premature babies wrapped in light blue blankets pressed against her chest.

Her hair was loose.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

But when her grandfather stepped between her and Weston, she finally stopped shaking.

Harrison Whitmore was eighty years old, silver-haired, dressed in a dark formal suit, and colder than any man in that room had expected.

He did not look like a visitor.

He looked like judgment with a heartbeat.

“You dare threaten my great-grandchildren?”

Weston grabbed his cheek and stumbled back.

For one moment, his arrogance died in front of the nurses, the doctors, the security chief, his pregnant mistress, and the wife he thought he had cornered.

Then pride tried to crawl back into his face.

“She said she had nobody!”

Ashley turned toward him.

Her smugness vanished.

“Weston… what did you do?”

Jade tightened her arms around the twins.

One tiny baby moved weakly beneath the blanket.

The other slept with a monitor lead taped to his fragile chest.

Jade lifted her chin through tears.

“I told you I was calling my grandfather.”

Weston stared at her.

Then at Harrison.

Then at the security officers entering through the hospital room door.

Only then did he begin to understand.

Jade had not been begging.

She had been warning him.

Harrison did not even look at Weston when he gave the order.

“Escort them out.”

The security chief stepped forward.

“Now.”

Weston tried to speak.

Tried to explain.

Tried to turn the room back into something he controlled.

But the divorce papers slipped from his hand and scattered across the hospital floor.

One page landed beside Jade’s bed.

The title faced upward.

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and Emergency Custody Request.

Harrison saw it.

His eyes became even colder.

Ashley backed away, suddenly frightened of the man she had thought was only a rich old relative.

Weston looked toward Jade.

For the first time since entering the room, he looked less like a husband leaving his wife and more like a man who had just walked into his own execution.

Jade looked down at her babies.

Then back at him.

“You brought divorce papers to a NICU room.”

Her voice trembled.

“But you forgot one thing.”

Weston swallowed.

“What?”

“My children were born early.”

“They were not born helpless.”

Harrison placed one steady hand on the rail of her bed.

May you like

“And neither was their mother.”
