PART 5

Weston tried to recover by becoming loud.

That had worked in boardrooms.

At restaurants.

At home.

It did not work in a NICU room owned by Harrison Whitmore’s hospital network.

“You can’t hit me,” Weston snapped.

Harrison looked at the security chief.

“Document that I struck him.”

The security chief nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Weston froze.

That was not the response he expected.

Harrison turned back to him.

“And document why.”

The nurse beside the monitor spoke before anyone asked.

“He called the babies runts.”

Another nurse added, “He threw divorce papers onto her bed while she was holding them.”

The doctor at the door said, “He attempted to pressure a recovering postpartum patient during neonatal care.”

Weston’s confidence began to collapse in pieces.

Ashley backed toward the wall.

Her hand remained on her belly.

She looked at Jade now with something like horror.

Not compassion yet.

Horror that she had attached herself to a man capable of saying those words about his own children.

Harrison picked up one page from the floor.

His eyes moved across the legal language.

Emergency custody.

Medical decision rights.

Temporary financial authority.

Waiver of marital claims.

Postpartum instability clause.

He looked at Weston.

“You wrote this before they were born.”

Weston said nothing.

Jade turned sharply.

“What?”

Harrison handed the page to his attorney, who had just entered the room.

“Date.”

The attorney checked.

“Prepared eighteen days ago.”

Jade’s face went white.

Eighteen days ago, she had still been pregnant.

Still rubbing her belly at night.

Still asking Weston whether he thought the twins would have his smile.

Still believing they were frightened together.

But he had already prepared papers to take control when she was weakest.

Ashley stared at Weston.

“You told me she surprised you.”

Weston hissed, “Not now.”

Ashley stepped back farther.

“You said the divorce papers were because she lied.”

Jade looked at her.

“Lied about what?”

Ashley’s voice trembled.

“He said the twins might not be his.”

The room went colder.

Harrison’s eyes sharpened.

Weston snapped, “Ashley.”

Jade stared at him as if he had finally become a stranger completely.

“You told her that?”

Weston tried to speak.

No words came fast enough.

Harrison turned to the doctor.

“Can paternity be established?”

The doctor answered carefully.

“Yes, but medical stability comes first.”

Harrison nodded.

“Then no one touches legal custody, medical rights, or access until my great-grandsons are stable and my granddaughter has counsel.”

Weston barked a laugh.

“Your granddaughter?”

Harrison stepped closer.

“My heir.”

Weston’s face changed.

At last, he understood the size of the mistake.
