Chapter 6 - Sophie and Owen

The child advocacy center interviewed Sophie and Owen separately.
No lawyers in the room.
No parents.
Trained interviewer Danielle Ross.
Sophie, six, was careful.
“Why were you in kitchen?”
“Daddy said stay.”
“Did anyone else tell you to stay?”
“No.”
“Did Mom tell you to leave?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Daddy said no.”
Then:
“Did Daddy know Valerie was coming?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“He said Valerie is coming and we have to be good.”
Then:
“What does good mean?”
“Don’t interrupt.”
Did he say:
Watch Mom?
Sophie said no.
Then Owen, four.
Less reliable sequencing.
He said:
“Daddy said see Mommy.”
“Tell me more.”
“Valerie make Mommy mad.”
That could be his interpretation after event.
Then:
“Did Daddy say those words?”
“I don’t know.”
Good interviewer did not turn that into quote.
Then one stronger detail.
Sophie said Lucas put his phone against the fruit bowl.
“Why?”
“He said he was making a video.”
There.
Police later found Lucas’s phone after warrant.
A recording existed.
Started after Valerie entered.
Angle pointed toward me.
Not toward side door.
It captured:
My face.
Part of Valerie’s shoulder.
Children.
It did not capture Valerie’s full body until after conflict began.
Why set up recording?
Lucas told police:
“Because Mara was volatile and I wanted a record.”
That sounds superficially reasonable.
Except:
He had not told me.
He had disabled our normal kitchen security camera that morning.
System log showed:
Kitchen camera disconnected manually at 8:14 a.m. from Lucas’s account.
Why?
He said:
“It kept sending motion alerts.”
Other cameras remained.
Only kitchen.
Then his phone replaced it.
Different angle.
That was preparation.
Not proof of an assault plan.
But preparation for a confrontation.
Then Sophie said something that hurt.
“Daddy told Valerie Mommy gets crazy when she thinks people take her stuff.”
What stuff?
“I don’t know.”
Could be overheard adult conversation.
Then:
“Did Daddy say that before Valerie came?”
“Yes. On phone.”
Police would look for call/texts.

No one treated a six-year-old as transcript.
But she gave investigators a direction.
