Chapter 4 - Valerie’s first version

Valerie pleaded not guilty.
Her lawyer, Jonah Price, released no public statement.
Good.
No media circus.
In her police interview before requesting counsel, she said:
Mara had threatened her previously.
I had not.
Mara had invited her over.
I had not.
Lucas invited her.
Mara became aggressive.
I had told her to leave.
She said I threw a mug.
There was a broken mug?
Yes.
On the kitchen floor.
Why?
The hidden phone later showed Valerie knocking it from the counter with the soup ladle.
Then:
She picked up pan because she was afraid.
The first pan strike?
She described it as:
“A defensive swing.”
Video angle did not show my hands clearly at exact second.
But audio did.
I said:
“Get out of my house.”
Valerie:
“Your husband asked me here.”
Me:
“I don’t care.”
Lucas:
“Mara, calm down.”
Valerie:
“She always talks to people like this?”
Then metal scraping.
Me:
“Put that down.”
Valerie:
“Back away.”
Then impact.
My scream.
Sophie crying.
That was first pan strike.
I had not touched Valerie.
No sound of physical struggle before.
Kitchen photographs showed:
I was near counter.
Valerie crossed several feet toward me.
Not perfect proof alone.
But strong.
Then second swing.
Police witnessed.
Bodycam.
That destroyed any claim the entire encounter was defensive.
Still, Valerie’s lawyer could argue first strike context separately.
Then the soup ladle.
Why did she enter holding it?
Valerie claimed she had brought soup.
Actually:
A pot of soup sat on our side counter.
She had cooked it at Lucas’s request?
That made no sense.
Later texts showed Lucas asked her to bring dinner because he wanted the evening to appear “normal” in front of children.
She arrived with a casserole carrier and ladle.
So the ladle itself was not necessarily a weapon.
Context mattered.
Then children.
Why were they in kitchen?
Valerie claimed:
“I assumed Mara wanted them there.”
Lucas said:
“Mara refused to send them upstairs.”
Old phone audio showed:
Me:
“Kids, go to the living room.”
Lucas:
“No. Stay here.”
Me:
“Lucas.”
Lucas:
“They live here too.”
There.
He intentionally kept them.

Why?
That question would become one of the most important in the entire case.
