Chapter 20 - The verdict Lucas did not expect

Lucas was convicted of attempted evidence interference/tampering-related misdemeanor.
Why?
He saw police.
Saw Natalie retrieve active recording.
Ignored command.
Grabbed her wrist.
Reached for phone.
Intent to interfere could reasonably be inferred.
He was acquitted on the child-endangerment count.
Why?
Jury was not convinced beyond reasonable doubt that before the sudden pan assault he consciously exposed children to the degree of danger required by the statute.
He created a terrible confrontation.
Criminal threshold remained higher.
Mixed verdict.
No felony assault complicity.
No conspiracy conviction.
No prison for “smiling.”
Family court still had the full conduct.
That distinction mattered.
Then Lucas looked relieved.
Natalie looked furious.
I felt neither.
A criminal acquittal on one count did not make the kitchen safe.
A conviction on another did not decide custody.
Different systems.
Different questions.
Then sentencing reserved.
Divorce not finished.
Valerie not sentenced.
Property not divided.

Custody not final.
Still active.
