PART 9
After the ballroom emptied, Robert Hale remained behind.
So did Lily.
Samuel sat at a small table near the stage with a glass of water and the tiredness of an old man returning to a house that had been damaged in his absence.
Robert stood before him like a student outside the principal’s office.
“I failed you,” Robert said.
Samuel looked at him.
“Yes.”
Robert flinched.
No excuse came.
That mattered.
Samuel continued.
“You failed them more.”
He nodded toward the service entrance, where the janitorial crew had quietly disappeared back into work even after being invited into the room.
Robert’s eyes reddened.
“I thought growth required compromise.”
Samuel sighed.
“Growth always asks for compromise.”
“The question is who is forced to pay it.”
Lily stood near the table, unsure whether she should leave.
Samuel noticed.
“Stay.”
“This concerns the future you are inheriting.”
Robert looked at her.
Not dismissively now.
Carefully.
Samuel removed a sealed envelope from inside his jacket.
“I did not come only because of a letter.”
Robert frowned.
Samuel placed the envelope on the table.
“Elaine left this before she died.”
Robert’s face softened at the mention of Samuel’s wife.
Samuel tapped the envelope.
“She wrote that if I ever became too tired to fight for the company, I should give it to someone who still knew why it mattered.”
Lily looked startled.
Samuel smiled faintly.
“Do not panic, Miss Parker.”
“I am not giving you a corporation tonight.”
She exhaled awkwardly.
For the first time all evening, Samuel laughed.
A small laugh.
Then he became serious again.
“I am forming a founder’s council.”
“Employees from every level.”
“Facilities.”
“Engineering.”
“Interns.”
“Nurses and technicians who use our devices.”
“People executives do not usually invite until a camera is present.”
Robert nodded slowly.
“That is wise.”
Samuel looked at him.
“It is late.”
“Not wise.”
Robert accepted the correction.
Samuel turned to Lily.
“You will help build it.”
Her voice came small.
“Why me?”
“Because you picked up a ring before you knew it was valuable.”
Lily swallowed.
“That doesn’t mean I know how to do this.”
“No.”
“It means you know where to begin.”
Robert looked toward the ballroom doors where Evelyn had been escorted out.
“What about the board?”
Samuel’s face hardened.
“They will learn what ownership means.”
Lily asked, “And what does it mean?”
Samuel looked at the empty room.
May you like
“Responsibility after everyone stops clapping.”
