PART 6
Samuel turned to Robert Hale.
“How many employees were injured in the last fiscal year?”
Robert’s face went blank.
The question was not expected.
Not at a gala.
Not in front of donors.
Not with champagne, photographers, and board members waiting for damage control.
“Sir, we can provide a report.”
Samuel’s eyes hardened.
“I asked how many.”
Robert looked toward the head of operations.
The man looked away.
That was answer enough.
Samuel continued.
“How many janitorial contractors lost health coverage after the last vendor change?”
No one spoke.
“How many interns worked over fifty hours last month without pay?”
Lily’s throat tightened.
“How many maintenance warnings were ignored before this party?”
He pointed toward the wet cable.
Silence.
Samuel looked around the room.
“This company was built to make equipment that kept people alive.”
“Tonight, it cannot keep a floor safe because the woman in charge of strategy was more offended by a janitor than by exposed wiring.”
Evelyn whispered, “This is unfair.”
Samuel’s eyes moved back to her.
“Unfair is being slapped for doing your job.”
The words settled over the ballroom.
Robert swallowed.
“Mr. Whitman, we will conduct a full review.”
Samuel gave him a long look.
“Robert.”
The chairman stiffened.
Samuel rarely used first names when disappointed.
“You were supposed to conduct one before I had to come here dressed like a man you stopped seeing.”
Robert lowered his eyes.
That wounded the room more than anger.
A founder disappointed in his successor.
Evelyn tried once more.
“I accept responsibility for the misunderstanding.”
Samuel turned.
“No.”
“You accept responsibility for assault.”
Evelyn’s face drained.
Robert inhaled sharply.
Samuel looked to the security team near the entrance.
“Please ask Ms. Shaw to leave the event.”
Evelyn stared.
“You can’t remove me.”
Samuel looked at Robert.
Robert’s face tightened with a lifetime of professional calculation.
Then he finally chose correctly.
“Security.”
Evelyn spun toward him.
“Robert.”
He did not meet her eyes.
“You are suspended pending termination review.”
Samuel’s voice was colder.
“Make it termination.”
The room gasped.
Robert looked at him.
Samuel lifted the ring.
“I retain founder authority under the trust.”
The board members froze.
Most of them had forgotten that clause existed.
Some had never known.
Evelyn finally understood the scale of her mistake.
She had not only attacked an old man.
She had awakened the only person in the company who could still overrule the entire room.
Security stepped forward.
Lily watched Evelyn’s confidence collapse.
Not with satisfaction exactly.
With recognition.
