PART 7

Evelyn did not leave quietly.

People like Evelyn rarely do when consequence arrives with witnesses.

She pulled her arm away from security.

“This is outrageous.”

“I have given eight years to this company.”

Samuel looked at her.

“And learned nothing from it.”

Her face flushed.

“I built the executive strategy division.”

Samuel’s voice stayed calm.

“You built a balcony and called it a foundation.”

Some employees stared at the floor.

Others did not hide their faces quickly enough.

Evelyn pointed at Lily.

“And she gets rewarded for making a scene?”

Lily stiffened.

Samuel stepped in front of her slightly.

“No.”

“She gets recognized for seeing what everyone else chose not to see.”

That silenced Evelyn.

For a moment.

Then she turned cruel.

“She is an intern.”

“Unpaid, I assume?” Samuel asked.

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

That told Samuel everything.

Lily looked embarrassed.

Not for herself.

For having her exploitation named in front of donors.

Samuel turned toward Robert.

“Is she unpaid?”

Robert answered quietly.

“Yes.”

Samuel looked around the room.

“How many unpaid interns are currently assigned to executive departments?”

No one answered.

Samuel looked to Robert again.

“How many?”

Robert said, “Thirty-two.”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“By Monday, they are employees.”

The head of finance nearly choked.

“Sir—”

Samuel looked at him.

“Paid employees.”

No one argued after that.

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“This is theater.”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you chose the stage.”

Security moved her toward the exit.

As she passed Lily, Evelyn whispered, “You’ll regret this.”

Lily flinched.

Samuel heard.

He turned sharply.

“Stop.”

Security halted.

Samuel stepped toward Evelyn.

“Threatening an intern after striking the founder is an impressive commitment to poor judgment.”

Evelyn’s mouth opened.

No words came.

Robert spoke to security.

“Remove her access badge.”

“Now.”

One officer unclipped the badge from Evelyn’s waist.

That small plastic card had controlled so many people’s fear.

In the guard’s hand, it looked cheap.

Evelyn was escorted through the ballroom doors while everyone watched.

No music covered her exit.

No applause softened it.

Just silence.

After she was gone, Samuel turned to Lily.

“Miss Parker.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Would you walk with me?”

She blinked.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the stage.

“I am too old to climb steps without someone honest nearby.”

A few people smiled nervously.

Lily offered her arm.

Samuel took it.
