PART 1

“She slapped the old janitor at the company party… then the founder’s ring exposed who he really was.”

The slap landed in front of three hundred employees, twelve board members, and the largest champagne tower Whitman Technologies had ever paid for.

For one second, no one moved.

Not the executives standing near the VIP table.

Not the waiters holding silver trays.

Not the young intern in the corner.

Not the old man in the gray janitor uniform whose face had just been struck sideways.

Evelyn Shaw, Director of Corporate Strategy, lowered her hand with a look of disgust.

“People like you don’t belong near executives.”

The old man steadied himself against the edge of the VIP table.

A glass trembled.

A few drops of champagne spilled onto the white linen.

He was thin, silver-haired, and slightly bent at the shoulders.

His janitor badge was clipped crookedly to his chest.

For a moment, he looked like exactly what Evelyn thought he was.

Invisible labor.

Disposable.

Embarrassing.

Then he lifted his eyes.

“I built this place before you had a desk.”

A nervous ripple moved through the ballroom.

Evelyn laughed.

It was sharp and ugly.

“You built what?”

The old man did not answer.

His hand shook slightly as he reached for the table to keep his balance.

That was when the ring slipped from his finger.

It hit the marble floor with a small metallic sound.

Almost no one noticed.

But Lily Parker did.

She was twenty-three years old, an unpaid executive intern who had been told all evening to stay near the wall, smile politely, and refill name cards if anyone important needed one.

She rushed forward before anyone else did.

“Sir, are you okay?”

Evelyn snapped, “Do not help him.”

Lily ignored her.

She bent beside the old man and picked up the ring.

It was heavy.

Old gold.

Worn at the edges.

A symbol was carved into the top.

A torch inside a gear.

Lily stopped breathing.

She had seen that symbol every morning when she walked through the lobby.

It was engraved beneath the bronze statue of the company founder.

Her voice shook.

“That ring has the founder’s seal.”

The chairman, Robert Hale, had been standing near the stage.

At those words, his face drained of color.

He stepped down slowly.

Then faster.

Then he stopped in front of the old man.

The entire ballroom watched.

Robert Hale’s voice broke through the silence.

“Everyone stand.”

No one understood.

But everyone obeyed.

The chairman bowed his head.

“That man created this company.”

Evelyn’s champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.

The old janitor looked at her calmly.

And for the first time that night, she understood she had not slapped a servant.

May you like

She had slapped the beginning of everything.
