PART 9

Laura called from a blocked number two days later.

Emily was sitting at Daniel’s kitchen table wearing one of his old sweatshirts and eating toast she had barely touched.

Daniel was making tea.

Mrs. Alvarez had dropped off school assignments.

The house smelled like cinnamon and laundry soap.

Safe smells.

Ordinary smells.

Emily’s phone buzzed.

Unknown Caller.

Her face changed so fast Daniel crossed the room before the second ring.

“You don’t have to answer.”

Emily stared at the screen.

“I want to hear what she says.”

Daniel did not like it.

But he did not take the choice from her.

He placed a recording app on the table, then nodded.

Emily answered on speaker.

For one second, there was only breathing.

Then Laura’s voice came.

“Emily.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Daniel stood beside her chair.

Laura began crying immediately.

“I’m your mother.”

Emily said nothing.

“You know I love you.”

Still nothing.

“I made mistakes.”

Emily’s hand tightened around the phone.

Laura’s voice softened.

That old dangerous softness.

“Daniel is using this to turn you against me.”

Emily opened her eyes.

The fear was still there.

But now something stood beside it.

Truth.

“No,” Emily said.

“You did that.”

Laura inhaled sharply.

“Baby, please.”

Emily flinched at the word, but she did not hang up.

Laura continued.

“If you go to court, they’ll ruin my life.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

He did not speak.

He let the silence belong to her.

Emily answered slowly.

“I thought about that.”

Laura cried harder.

“And?”

Emily’s voice shook.

“You cared more about your life being ruined than mine being unsafe.”

Laura stopped crying.

Just for a second.

The real Laura slipped through.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.”

Emily’s face went pale.

Daniel reached toward the phone, but Emily raised one hand.

No.

She wanted to finish.

“You sacrificed me.”

The line went silent.

Laura whispered, “Emily—”

“I’m done lying for you.”

Then Emily ended the call.

Her hand shook so violently Daniel gently took the phone and set it down.

The recording saved.

Emily stared at the toast.

Then began to cry.

Daniel pulled a chair close and sat beside her.

He did not say everything would be okay.

That would have been too simple.

He said, “That was brave.”

Emily shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“Can both be true?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“That’s usually how brave works.”

That was the first time Emily smiled.

Only a little.

Only through tears.

But it was real.
