PART 7

Grant Miller was arrested at 1:36 a.m.

He did not go quietly.

That was what Officer Wells told them later.

He shouted.

Threatened lawsuits.

Claimed Emily was unstable.

Claimed Laura could explain everything.

Then officers found Emily’s phone in his desk drawer.

Her school ID in his truck console.

And a wet towel in the bathroom with blood on the edge.

The bathtub story was dead now.

It had drowned in its own evidence.

Laura was not arrested at first.

That made Emily panic.

“She’ll make them believe her.”

Daniel sat beside the bed.

“She can’t make everyone unsee what they saw.”

Emily looked toward the hallway.

“She always does.”

That sentence told Daniel the shape of the last two years better than any medical report.

Dr. Reed arranged for a pediatric trauma specialist.

A social worker arrived.

Then a child protective services investigator.

Even though Emily was seventeen, the law still recognized what should have been obvious to everyone.

She needed protection.

Laura tried again when the investigator arrived.

She fixed her cardigan.

Wiped her face.

Softened her voice.

“I love my daughter.”

“I made mistakes.”

“I was afraid of Grant too.”

Emily heard her and went still.

The investigator asked one question.

“Then why did you say she slipped while bathing?”

Laura’s face tightened.

“I panicked.”

Dr. Reed spoke from the doorway.

“You attempted to block medical examination.”

Laura looked at him.

“I’m her mother.”

Officer Wells stepped forward.

“You also signed prior forms denying concerns after your daughter disclosed fear.”

Laura’s eyes flashed.

“She lies.”

The words came too fast.

Too sharp.

Too familiar.

Emily heard them and something inside her finally shifted.

For years, that sentence had been a cage.

She lies.

Now it sounded like evidence against the woman saying it.

Emily sat up.

Daniel reached to help, but she shook her head.

She wanted to do this herself.

“I did lie,” Emily said.

Everyone turned toward her.

Laura’s face lit with desperate hope.

Then Emily finished.

“I lied every time I said I was okay.”

Laura’s expression fell.

Emily’s voice shook, but did not break.

“I lied when I said I fell.”

“I lied when I said the bruises were from soccer.”

“I lied because you stood beside me and made me.”

The corridor went silent.

The investigator looked at Laura.

Laura no longer looked like a crying mother.

She looked cornered.

Emily kept going.

“But I’m done lying for you.”

Daniel looked at her with pride so fierce it hurt.

Officer Wells wrote down every word.

Dr. Reed stood beside the nurses, watching the lie collapse completely.
