PART 4

Dr. Reed had treated enough children to know when a story arrived rehearsed.

Laura’s story was too smooth.

Too fast.

Too crowded with details no one had asked for.

“She slipped while bathing.”

“She hit her arm on the edge.”

“She has anxiety.”

“She runs when scared.”

“She’s always been dramatic.”

Emily sat on the hospital bed with the white blanket pulled to her chin.

Every time Laura said dramatic, Emily’s shoulders rose.

Every time Laura said anxious, Emily looked at the floor.

Every time Laura said my daughter, Daniel’s grip on the bed rail tightened.

Dr. Reed asked one nurse to escort Laura to a consultation area.

Laura refused.

“I’m her mother.”

Dr. Reed did not blink.

“And right now, I am her doctor.”

That was the first wall Laura could not step through.

Security guided her a few feet away.

She kept crying.

But her eyes were sharp now.

Watching.

Waiting.

Dr. Reed returned to Emily.

His voice changed completely.

“Emily, I need to ask you something privately.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Can he stay?”

Dr. Reed nodded.

“If you want him here.”

“I do.”

Daniel sat beside the bed, careful not to touch her unless she reached first.

She reached.

He took her hand gently.

Dr. Reed asked, “Did you slip in the bath?”

Emily closed her eyes.

A tear slid down her bruised cheek.

“No.”

“Did someone hurt you?”

Her hand tightened around Daniel’s.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Her lips trembled.

“Grant.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Dr. Reed did not react visibly.

He only wrote.

“Who is Grant?”

“My mom’s boyfriend.”

“Was your mother there?”

Emily’s breathing became shallow.

“Yes.”

Dr. Reed paused.

“Did she try to stop him?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

The word was so small it nearly disappeared.

But Daniel heard it.

The nurse heard it.

Dr. Reed heard it.

Daniel lowered his head, not trusting himself to speak.

Emily whispered, “She told me to say I fell.”

Dr. Reed closed the chart.

Then opened a different one.

A hospital abuse protocol file.

That simple movement made Laura’s story officially impossible.

The nurse returned.

“Police are on the way.”

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Good.”

Laura heard the word police from down the hall.

Her crying changed instantly.

It became anger.

“You can’t do this.”

Dr. Reed turned toward her.

“I already did.”

Laura pointed at Daniel.

“He’s not family.”

Emily sat up as much as her pain allowed.

Her voice shook, but it rose.

“He is more family than you were tonight.”

The corridor went silent again.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because those words gave him back something Laura had tried to erase.

May you like

A daughter.
