part 2

PART 2
Daniel Harper had found Emily behind the gas station on Route 11.
Barefoot.
Wet.
Shaking.
Wrapped in a bath towel that had turned gray from rain and dirt.
At first, he thought she was a runaway.
Then she lifted her face.
“Daniel?”
He nearly dropped the coffee in his hand.
He had not seen Emily in seven months.
Not since Laura told him to stay away.
Not since Laura changed her number, blocked his calls, and told neighbors Daniel was “too involved” with a family that wasn’t his.
Daniel had been Emily’s stepfather for eight years.
He married Laura when Emily was seven.
He taught Emily to ride a bike.
Taught her to make pancakes.
Sat in the front row at every school concert.
Helped her with algebra even when he was terrible at it.
Then the marriage ended.
Laura said she needed a fresh start.
Daniel signed the divorce papers because he thought peace would protect Emily.
He was wrong.
The last time he tried to visit, Laura stood on the porch and said, “She’s not your daughter.”
Emily had been watching from the upstairs window.
Daniel saw her.
Laura closed the curtain.
After that, he sent birthday cards.
They came back unopened.
He sent Christmas gifts.
They were returned.
He told himself Emily was being protected from conflict.
Then he found her behind a gas station at 11:48 p.m., shivering and whispering, “Please don’t take me home.”
He did not ask questions first.
He wrapped his coat around her.
Carried her to his truck.
Turned the heat on full.
Then called the hospital.
On the drive, Emily kept fading in and out of panic.
“They said you wouldn’t come.”
Daniel kept one hand steady on the wheel.
“Who said that?”
She looked at him with bruised eyes.
“Mom.”
His chest tightened.
“She said you forgot me.”
Daniel nearly pulled over.
“I never forgot you.”
Emily began to cry silently.
“She told me if I called you, you’d send me back.”
That was the moment Daniel stopped feeling heartbreak and started feeling something far more dangerous.
Clarity.
At the hospital entrance, Laura arrived ten minutes after them.
Too fast.
As if she had been searching nearby.
She ran toward Emily crying.
But Emily screamed and clung to Daniel’s shirt.
That scream was why Dr. Reed was called immediately.
That scream was why the nurses watched Laura’s hands.
May you like
That scream was why Laura’s bathroom story began dying before she finished telling it.
