part 9

PART 9
Adrian asked to speak to Grace alone.
Everyone said no.
Grace said yes.
Nora objected.
Outside counsel objected.
Tessa looked terrified.
Grace looked at Lily sleeping through the glass wall of Nora’s office and made her decision.
“Record it.”
Adrian flinched.
She smiled without warmth.
“See?”
“I’m learning.”
They met in a smaller conference room with glass walls, visible to everyone but private enough for his ego to try one last trick.
Adrian sat across from her.
For the first time all day, he looked exhausted.
“Grace.”
“No.”
His eyes sharpened.
“What?”
“You don’t get to say my name like we are at home.”
He swallowed.
Then leaned forward.
“I made mistakes.”
She stared at him.
“That word is too small.”
“I panicked.”
“No.”
“You planned.”
His jaw flexed.
“The company was under pressure.”
“Marcus and I were trying to stabilize cash flow.”
“Investors were circling.”
“Everything was temporary.”
Grace folded her hands.
“You used my name.”
“I needed a clean outside account.”
“You forged my signature.”
“You would have been protected.”
She laughed once.
That surprised him.
“Protected from what?”
“Prison?”
“Public shame?”
“Losing my daughter because her father framed me as a thief?”
He looked away.
There it was.
Not denial.
Avoidance.
Grace’s voice lowered.
“Were you going to blame me?”
Adrian said nothing.
The recording captured that silence.
It would become one of the most important pieces of evidence.
Grace leaned back.
“I came here to give Tessa your suitcase.”
His face tightened.
“I know.”
“I thought that would be the humiliating part.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And now?”
“Now I understand the affair was just the room you distracted me with while you were burning down the house.”
For a moment, he looked wounded.
She did not care.
He reached across the table.
“Grace, think of Lily.”
She stood so abruptly the chair slid back.
“I am.”
That was the truth.
The whole truth.
The reason she had brought the suitcase.
The reason she had opened the envelope.
The reason she would not be quiet.
Lily deserved a mother whose name was clean.
A life not built on forged documents.
A father seen clearly, even if the truth hurt.
Grace turned toward the door.
Adrian spoke behind her.
“You’ll destroy everything.”
She looked back once.
“No.”
“You did.”
May you like
Then she walked out and handed the recording to Nora.
