part 6

PART 6
Grace did not go upstairs alone.
She took Lily.
Nora offered to have an assistant stay with the child in a private office.
Grace refused.
Not because it was practical.
Because she was done letting Adrian separate her from what mattered before explaining what he had done.
Lily stayed in her arms, quiet and wide-eyed.
Tessa followed.
Security followed.
Adrian was ordered to remain in the lobby.
He refused.
Then two security officers stood in front of him.
That was the first public demotion of Adrian Beckett’s life.
He did not take it well.
On the executive floor, the air felt colder.
Glass walls.
Muted carpets.
Art chosen by consultants.
A conference room waited with a long table and screens already glowing.
Nora’s finance team had pulled the records.
Grace sat down slowly.
Lily curled into her lap.
Tessa stood near the door, arms wrapped around herself.
Nora placed the first printed page in front of Grace.
“This account was opened nine months ago.”
Grace stared at her name.
Her forged signature.
Her birth date.
Her social security number.
Her old driver’s license photo.
Her stomach turned.
“How did he get all this?”
Nora’s mouth tightened.
“Some of it came from spousal documents.”
“Some came from HR family insurance records.”
“And some came from internal restricted files.”
Tessa whispered, “He asked me to print those.”
Nora nodded.
“That will matter.”
Grace turned the page.
Eight million dollars had moved through the account in staggered transfers.
Consulting fees.
Vendor payments.
Charitable allocations.
Investment reimbursements.
Words that sounded clean until placed beside a forged signature.
Grace looked up.
“Why use my name?”
Nora did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Grace’s voice dropped.
“Nora.”
The legal officer looked at her with sympathy she clearly did not enjoy giving.
“The account appears designed to make you look like the outside beneficiary.”
Grace felt Lily’s small hand press against her chest.
“My husband set me up?”
Nora nodded once.
“If the transfers were discovered, the paper trail would point to you.”
Tessa covered her mouth.
Grace stared at the table.
Adrian had not only cheated.
He had built an exit.
A story.
A wife greedy enough to steal.
A husband betrayed at home and at work.
He could divorce her, destroy her reputation, and keep Lily by claiming Grace was under criminal investigation.
It was elegant.
Almost.
Except he had underestimated Tessa’s fear.
And Grace’s decision to bring a suitcase to the lobby.
Grace looked at Nora.
“What happens now?”
Nora’s voice became professional.
“We notify the board.”
“We notify outside counsel.”
“And likely federal authorities.”
Grace nodded.
Then looked at Tessa.
“You need your own lawyer.”
Tessa swallowed.
“I know.”
Grace looked back at the forged signature.
Her heartbreak had become something colder.
Adrian had tried to write her name on his crime.

Now she was going to make him read it back in court.
