part 4

PART 4
In the lobby, Grace held the envelope like it might burn her fingers.
Employees watched from every angle.
A security guard stepped closer but stopped when he saw Adrian’s face.
Not angry.
Not embarrassed.
Terrified.
That terrified Grace more than the papers.
Adrian Beckett was never terrified in public.
He built his image on perfect control.
He gave keynote speeches about risk.
He negotiated acquisitions without blinking.
He smiled through lawsuits and made reporters thank him for evading questions.
But now, in front of his own employees, he looked like a man watching the floor disappear.
Grace looked down at the papers again.
“This is my name.”
Tessa nodded.
“I know.”
“This is my signature.”
Tessa’s voice broke.
“It isn’t yours.”
Grace’s ears began to ring.
Lily touched her cheek.
“Mommy?”
Grace kissed her daughter’s forehead without looking away from Adrian.
“It’s okay, baby.”
It was not okay.
Nothing was okay.
But Lily needed to hear those words before anyone else heard the next ones.
Grace looked at Adrian.
“What did you do?”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
He stepped closer.
“Give me the envelope.”
Grace almost smiled.
There he was.
Not the husband begging forgiveness.
Not the cheater caught with luggage at his feet.
The man behind the man.
The one who gave orders when charm failed.
“No.”
“Grace.”
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
“Then explain it.”
He looked at the crowd.
Bad move.
Grace followed his gaze.
Executives.
Assistants.
Interns.
Security.
Reception.
Everyone watching.
She lifted the papers slightly.
“Explain it here.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Don’t be stupid.”
Tessa flinched.
Grace noticed.
That flinch had history.
Her anger shifted.
No longer only for herself.
“Tessa,” she said quietly.
“What is this account?”
Tessa wiped her eyes.
“I think he used it to move company money.”
The lobby erupted.
Someone whispered, “Oh my God.”
Another person muttered, “That’s fraud.”
Adrian turned on Tessa.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Tessa stepped back but did not run.
“I know you told me your wife approved it.”
“I know you had me print her documents.”
“I know you said if I loved you, I’d stay quiet.”
Grace closed her eyes.
There it was.
The same sentence in another shape.
If I loved you.
A blade men like Adrian passed from woman to woman.
Grace opened her eyes again.
“Security.”
Adrian snapped, “No one moves.”
But they did.
Because his voice no longer sounded like authority.
May you like
It sounded like evidence.
