PART 7
Adrian tried to leave the building at 2:16 p.m.
Security stopped him near the private garage.
He said he needed air.
Then he said he needed medication.
Then he said he had a client emergency.
All three lies failed.
By 2:40 p.m., the board had convened in emergency session.
By 3:05, outside counsel arrived.
By 3:30, Adrian’s company phone and laptop were secured.
By 4:00, he had stopped looking angry and started looking cornered.
Grace watched through the glass wall of the conference room as he argued with two board members.
He did not look toward her.
That hurt less than it should have.
Some betrayals cut so cleanly they remove the last need for love.
Lily had finally fallen asleep on a couch in Nora’s office, wrapped in Grace’s shawl.
Grace sat beside her for ten minutes and let herself feel the weight of the day.
The suitcase.
The envelope.
The account.
The eight million dollars.
The forged signature.
Then Tessa appeared at the doorway.
“I shouldn’t bother you.”
Grace looked up.
“No.”
Tessa hesitated.
“I remembered something.”
Grace stood.
“What?”
Tessa held out her phone.
“Adrian left voicemails.”
“When?”
“After I told him I didn’t want to keep seeing him.”
Grace took one careful breath.
“Play them for Nora.”
Tessa shook her head.
“I think you should hear the first one.”
Grace did not want to.
She did anyway.
Adrian’s voice filled the small office.
Soft.
Angry under the softness.
“Tessa, you need to calm down.”
“You don’t understand the exposure here.”
“If Grace finds out, she will panic, and then I’ll have to let legal handle her.”
The message ended.
Grace’s face did not change.
Tessa played another.
“If you say anything about the account, you become part of it.”
“Think carefully.”
The third was worse.
“My wife signs whatever I put in front of her.”
“She has no idea what she owns.”
Grace closed her eyes.
Not from weakness.
From recognition.
There it was.
The marriage beneath the marriage.
Adrian had never seen her as a partner.
Only access.
Cover.
A signature.
A beautiful wife in photos who could become useful if he needed a scapegoat.
Nora listened to the recordings in silence.
Then she said, “These are critical.”
Tessa nodded.
“I know.”
Grace looked at the young woman.
“You waited too long.”
Tessa’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“But you didn’t wait forever.”
That was not forgiveness.
It was accuracy.
Across the hall, Adrian suddenly looked through the glass at them.
His eyes found Tessa’s phone.
Then Grace’s face.
For the first time all day, Grace saw pure fear.
Not of losing his wife.
Not of losing his intern.
May you like
Of being heard.
