PART 8

Roland sat down slowly.

He looked smaller now.

Not weak.

Not sorry.

Just smaller.

A man whose stage lights had gone out.

Celeste remained standing beside her chair.

Her engagement ring flashed under the chandelier, but the fairy tale around it had cracked.

“What happens now?” she asked.

I looked at Thomas.

He removed one last page from his briefcase.

I had not planned to use it unless Roland denied everything.

Of course he had.

“This is the latest vendor communication,” Thomas said.

Celeste looked confused.

“Latest?”

Thomas placed it on the table.

“The venue manager contacted Seraphina’s office this afternoon.”

“They said Roland had promised a wire transfer from her business account by Friday.”

Celeste’s mouth fell open.

“This afternoon?”

I nodded.

“Before dinner.”

Vivian looked at Roland.

“You said tonight would fix everything.”

Roland snapped, “It would have if she had done what family does.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“It would have worked if I had stayed useful.”

He said nothing.

Thomas continued.

“There is also mention of a second event.”

Celeste frowned.

“What second event?”

I turned to Roland.

He looked away.

That gave him away before the page did.

Thomas read the summary.

“An additional rehearsal dinner reservation under Seraphina Vale’s billing authorization.”

Vivian whispered, “Roland.”

Celeste looked horrified.

“You added the rehearsal dinner too?”

Roland exploded.

“I was trying to give you the wedding you deserved.”

Celeste shouted back, “With money that was never yours.”

The dining room went silent.

Her voice echoed against the old walls.

The portraits seemed to stare.

Roland breathed heavily.

He had never liked being challenged.

Especially by the child he had trained to adore him.

Celeste looked at me.

“I didn’t know about the rehearsal dinner.”

“I know.”

Then I added, “But now you do.”

She nodded.

That sentence mattered.

Because after truth arrives, ignorance is no longer a place to hide.

Vivian looked utterly broken.

“I just wanted one beautiful wedding.”

I stared at her.

“You wanted beauty without honesty.”

She flinched.

I continued.

“You wanted flowers over debt.”

“Music over fraud.”

“Pictures in a house no one admitted I owned.”

Vivian cried harder.

Celeste looked down.

Roland’s anger had burned into cold contempt.

“So what do you want?”

The question was bitter.

But also real.

For the first time, he was no longer issuing orders.

He was asking terms.

I stood at the table with the black folder in front of me.

“I want the truth in writing.”

Roland laughed.

“You want a confession?”

“Yes.”

His laugh died.

I looked at Thomas.

“He drafts it tonight.”

“You sign by noon.”

“Every vendor receives written notice.”

“Every relative receives correction.”

“This house is not a family asset.”

“My accounts are not family funds.”

“My silence is no longer available.”

Celeste whispered, “And the wedding?”

I looked at her.

“That is yours to rebuild.”

May you like

“Honestly.”
