PART 5

Celeste kept staring at the number.

It was large enough to change her posture.

Large enough to make her engagement ring look suddenly ridiculous under the candlelight.

Large enough to explain every year I said I was too busy for vacations, too tired for family brunches, too practical for new clothes.

I had not been practical.

I had been drained.

Roland poured himself more wine.

The movement was too controlled.

His hand was shaking.

“You made your point.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“I’m just getting to it.”

Vivian whispered, “Please don’t make this worse.”

I turned to her.

“Worse for whom?”

“For the people who stole?”

“Or for the person finally naming it?”

She went silent.

I pulled out three cream-colored envelopes.

Celeste recognized the first one immediately.

Her name was written across it.

“What is that?”

I placed it in front of her.

“Notice to your wedding vendors.”

She stared.

“Why would my vendors need notice from you?”

“Because Roland listed me as financial guarantor without my consent.”

Celeste blinked.

Then looked at him.

“What?”

Roland said nothing.

I opened the third section of the folder.

Inside were emails, vendor confirmations, and copies of contracts.

None of them needed readable text for the truth to be obvious.

My name was on billing forms.

My email was listed as backup.

My business office number appeared under emergency payment contact.

Celeste’s face collapsed.

“Dad, tell me this isn’t real.”

Roland looked at her with irritation.

Not shame.

Irritation.

“I was making sure your wedding went smoothly.”

“With her name?”

“She always pays.”

The sentence came out too easily.

Too naturally.

Too honestly.

Vivian closed her eyes.

Celeste stared at him.

For the first time in her life, she saw what I had always seen.

Roland did not love generosity.

He loved access.

If someone gave once, he believed they had created a door.

He simply kept walking through it.

I placed another page on the table.

“This is the venue contract.”

“The final balance is due Friday.”

“If unpaid, there is a cancellation penalty.”

Celeste whispered, “How much?”

I told her.

She looked sick.

“That’s why he told me you were paying tonight.”

“Yes.”

Roland slammed his fist down again.

“Enough with this performance.”

This time, no one jumped.

Not Vivian.

Not Celeste.

Not me.

His anger had lost its audience.

And without our fear, it looked embarrassingly small.

I picked up the envelope addressed to Celeste.

“These notices go out tomorrow.”

“Every vendor will be told I am not responsible for any deposit, balance, cancellation fee, or contract tied to your wedding.”

Celeste’s lips trembled.

“My wedding will collapse.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“The version built on my bank account will collapse.”

“There is a difference.”

Vivian began crying again.

Roland glared at me.

“You would humiliate your sister like this?”

I leaned forward.

“No, Dad.”

“You humiliated her when you planned her wedding on forged promises.”

Celeste looked at him.

May you like

For once, she did not defend him.
