PART 9

Nora stepped into the hallway to take a call.

Walter followed a minute later, saying the board needed immediate guidance.

That left Damian and Evelyn alone for the first time in months.

Alone, except for the baby between them.

The boardroom suddenly felt too large.

Too bright.

Too honest.

Damian straightened slowly.

“Can I…”

He stopped.

For a man who had negotiated billion-dollar transactions across continents, he seemed unable to finish the simplest request.

Evelyn watched him carefully.

“Can you what?”

His eyes dropped to Lily.

“Can I see her?”

Evelyn did not move right away.

The hesitation cut him more sharply than anger would have.

He had earned it.

That was what he was finally learning.

Not all losses arrive when someone leaves.

Some arrive when the person in front of you has every reason not to trust your hands.

Lily blinked awake again.

Her eyes drifted toward Damian.

He took one careful step forward.

Not the aggressive stride from the beginning of the hearing.

Something smaller.

Human.

Evelyn placed one hand over Lily’s back.

“She gets startled by loud voices.”

The sentence was simple.

But to Damian it sounded like an indictment.

He nodded.

“I understand.”

She almost said, No, you don’t.

But she swallowed it.

Because somewhere beneath the rage, he looked genuinely terrified.

Not of scandal.

Of touching what he had missed.

Evelyn turned slightly so he could see Lily better.

The baby studied him with solemn curiosity.

Her little mouth moved once.

Then, unexpectedly, she smiled.

It was brief.

Half-formed.

The kind of infant smile adults debate endlessly.

Gas.

Reflex.

Recognition.

To Damian, it felt like absolution he did not deserve.

His breath caught.

“Oh God.”

His hand lifted slightly, then stopped midair.

He looked at Evelyn before moving closer.

She nodded once.

Only once.

Permission.

He touched one finger to Lily’s tiny hand.

Her fingers wrapped around it immediately.

That was all it took.

He lowered his head.

Evelyn saw his shoulders shake before she realized he was crying.

Not elegantly.

Not in the controlled way men like Damian Sterling imagine themselves crying.

Quietly.

Helplessly.

Like something inside him had finally stopped performing.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

Evelyn’s throat tightened.

“I know.”

He looked up at her with red-rimmed eyes.

“I should have known.”

“Yes.”

He accepted that too.

Then he asked the question she had been waiting for more than she realized.

“What do you want from me now?”

Not, What do I owe?

Not, How do we contain this?

Not, What will the board think?

What do you want?

Evelyn looked down at Lily.

Then back at the man who had once chosen signature over listening.

“The truth,” she said.

“In public.”

“And then consistency in private.”

That answer frightened him.

Because truth in public would cost him image.

Consistency in private would cost him ego.

In other words, everything a man like Damian most often mistakes for selfhood.

Still, he nodded.

May you like

Because for the first time in a long time, he had nothing left worth protecting except the chance to become her father.
