PART 6

The morning of the hearing, Graham Sterling arrived at corporate headquarters before Damian.

He liked empty offices.

He liked the hour before staff fully arrived, when hallways were quiet and control felt clean.

He stepped out of the private elevator in a charcoal overcoat and went straight to the legal conference suite.

Nora Bell was not there yet.

Neither was Evelyn.

But Graham had already heard enough from the gossip channels he paid attention to.

A doorman in Evanston had mentioned seeing a baby carrier in Evelyn’s building.

A driver who once worked for the family had mentioned Marianne buying formula in bulk.

He had begun to suspect what Damian refused to consider.

He just did not expect her to bring the child into the hearing.

At 8:15 a.m., Graham cornered the female attorney assigned to oversee the paperwork.

“If Mrs. Sterling arrives emotional,” he said, “keep this efficient.”

“She has a tendency to stage things.”

The attorney nodded politely.

She was too junior to challenge him.

At 8:22, he called Damian.

“Where are you?”

“In the car.”

“Good.”

“Do not let her derail this.”

Damian sounded impatient.

“There is nothing to derail.”

Graham almost smiled.

His son still believed endings could be scheduled.

Then at 8:37, the front desk called up to say Evelyn Sterling had arrived.

Not alone.

With counsel.

And with a child.

For the first time in years, Graham Sterling lost his ability to mask his reaction.

The receptionist on the line heard it.

A pause.

Then a sharp inhale.

He hung up and turned toward the window.

The city below looked hard and metallic.

He understood immediately what Evelyn was doing.

She was not walking in as a grieving wife.

She was walking in as evidence.

He sent one text to Damian.

She has a baby.

Get ahead of this.

But Damian never saw it before stepping into the boardroom.

By then he was already inside, already standing in front of the executives, already preparing to sign away a marriage with the same confidence he used to approve acquisitions.

Graham arrived moments later and stopped in the doorway just in time to hear Damian say, “What baby is that?”

Then Evelyn answered, “Your daughter.”

Graham stayed hidden behind the partially open door long enough to see the executives’ faces.

Long enough to understand something dangerous.

This was not just personal humiliation.

If the board believed Damian lied about having no child in a hearing involving family assets, they would start asking what else he had minimized.

Optics, the very word Graham worshiped, had turned against him.

He stepped back into the hallway before anyone saw him.

For the first time in decades, the chairman emeritus chose retreat.

Not because he felt guilt.

Because he understood numbers.

And the cost of this room had just become unpredictable.

Inside, Evelyn still did not know Graham had come.

She only knew the boardroom air had changed.

What she did not know yet was that the person most frightened by Lily was not Damian.

It was the man who taught Damian how to abandon her.
