part 2

PART 2
No one sat down after that.
The hearing stopped being a hearing the moment the baby opened her eyes.
The female attorney slowly removed her glasses.
The older executive on Damian’s right, Walter Finch, looked from Evelyn to the child and then back to Damian as if he were waiting for someone to laugh and explain the scene away.
No one did.
Damian’s face had drained of color.
He looked at the baby girl as if she were a ghost with his eyes.
The infant’s hair was dark and soft.
Her cheeks were round.
But it was the shape of her mouth and the sharp gray-blue of her gaze that made his breathing turn shallow.
She looked like him.
Not enough to matter in a crowd.
Enough to matter in a marriage.
Enough to ruin every lie he had told in this room.
Walter stepped forward, unable to contain himself.
“Damian… you said there was no child.”
The words landed heavily in the silence.
Damian did not answer him.
He was still staring at Evelyn.
Or maybe through her.
Trying to reconstruct months that had suddenly changed shape.
He remembered the last night in their penthouse.
The fight.
The accusation.
The papers he had thrown across the marble island.
The way Evelyn had pressed one hand to her lower stomach while telling him they could still save what was left.
He had thought it was fear.
He had thought it was weakness.
He had walked out before she could finish speaking.
Now that memory turned in his chest like broken glass.
He took another step toward her.
The executives behind him remained frozen.
The attorney looked down at the legal papers with an expression that said she already understood this divorce had become something far larger than contract language.
The baby made a small sound and turned her face into Evelyn’s chest.
Evelyn slid one hand protectively over the carrier.
She did not back away.
She did not cry.
That frightened Damian more than if she had.
He had always known how to respond to tears.
He did not know how to fight calm truth.
“Your daughter,” he repeated, as if tasting the words might make them false.
Evelyn nodded once.
“Yes.”
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Then the question finally broke out of him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The pain in his voice was real.
So was the accusation.
Evelyn’s expression changed for the first time.
Not into anger.
Into something older.
A bruised disappointment that had clearly lived in her longer than this morning.
“Because you never gave me the chance.”
Those words struck harder than the first reveal.
Not because they were loud.
Because everyone in the room could hear that they had history behind them.
Walter looked away.
The second executive cleared his throat and failed to hide his discomfort.
The attorney shut the folder in front of her.
Even she seemed to know the company’s founder’s son had walked into this room as a man seeking convenience and had instead met consequence wrapped in a baby blanket.
Damian looked at Evelyn as if he were trying to find the exact second he had ruined his own life.
He still did not know that the worst part was not that he had missed the birth.
It was that Evelyn had once tried to tell him.
May you like
And he had chosen not to hear.
