part 7

PART 7
The emergency hearing happened at noon the next day.
The blizzard had weakened, but the roads were still unsafe.
So the judge appeared on a video screen in the lodge conference room.
I sat beside Naomi with Lily asleep against my coat.
Mason stood near the back wall, refusing to leave until I was legally safe.
Adrian appeared from the sheriff’s station with his lawyer.
He had changed clothes.
He had shaved.
He looked almost like the man donors trusted.
That frightened me more than the storm version of him.
Men like Adrian recover polish quickly.
They count on the world forgetting what they looked like when they were finally honest.
His lawyer spoke first.
He called it a marital misunderstanding.
A custody disagreement during a weather emergency.
An unfortunate breakdown in communication.
Naomi let him finish.
Then she played the cabin footage.
The screen showed the dining table.
The papers.
Adrian sliding them toward me.
Me writing REFUSED.
Sienna laughing near the fireplace.
Adrian grabbing my wrist.
Me pulling away.
The phone falling.
The landline battery being ripped from the wall.
Then the porch camera.
Me shoved outside.
The snowmobile starting.
Adrian’s voice through the storm.
“Nobody will come for you, Evelyn.”
The judge watched without moving.
Then Sienna’s voice filled the room.
“Lily will forget you faster than you think.”
My arms tightened around my sleeping daughter.
Adrian’s lawyer stopped taking notes.
Naomi did not look satisfied.
She looked furious in the controlled way good lawyers do when evidence is worse than argument.
Then she presented the timeline.
Adrian’s emergency petition filed at 3:12 p.m.
Driver canceled at 4:48 p.m.
Sienna checked into the cabin before the gala ended.
Custody papers printed at 6:05 p.m.
My attorney received my refused-document photos at 9:37 p.m.
Satellite distress call at 10:26 p.m.
Lodge confrontation at 10:51 p.m.
The judge removed her glasses.
“Mr. Hartwell, your petition claims your wife abandoned the child.”
Adrian’s lawyer began to speak.
The judge raised a hand.
“I am asking Mr. Hartwell.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“My wife was unstable.”
The judge’s voice cooled.
“Your wife appears to have been abandoned in a blizzard after refusing to sign custody documents.”
Silence.
Temporary sole custody was granted to me.
Adrian’s access to Lily was suspended pending investigation.
The trust modification was upheld.
All international travel for Lily was blocked.
Adrian’s face changed with each ruling.
He did not look like a father losing access to his child.
He looked like a man watching doors close around property he thought he owned.
After the hearing ended, Naomi placed one hand over mine.
“It’s temporary.”
“I know.”
“But it’s protection.”
I looked down at Lily.
Her eyelashes rested against her cheeks.
May you like
Her rabbit was trapped between us.
“For now,” I whispered, “temporary is everything.”
