part 1

PART 1
“My husband left me in a blizzard and escaped with his mistress on the only snowmobile… but he didn’t know I had already refused to sign away our daughter.”
Adrian Hartwell left me in the snow like I was something he had finished using.
The only snowmobile screamed away from the cabin porch, throwing ice and powder into the black mountain air.
He looked back once.
Not with regret.
Not with panic.
With victory.
Sienna sat behind him in her white winter suit, her arms wrapped around his waist, her blonde hair whipping beneath the hood like she belonged in the life he had stolen from me.
I stood barefoot in the snow in a black evening gown and a dark fur coat soaked through to the lining.
My fingers were numb.
My lips were bleeding from the cold.
My chest hurt from screaming our daughter’s name.
Adrian’s voice cut through the storm.
“Nobody will come for you, Evelyn.”
I stumbled one step forward.
The snow swallowed my ankle.
The mountain wind shoved me back like it wanted to prove him right.
But I raised my head and screamed after him anyway.
“You are not taking my daughter!”
Sienna turned her face over his shoulder.
Even through the blizzard, I could see her smile.
It was calm.
Cruel.
Certain.
“Lily will forget you faster than you think.”
The snowmobile disappeared between the dark pines.
Its red taillight flickered once.
Then vanished.
For a moment, there was only storm.
The luxury cabin behind me glowed warm through tall glass windows, but Adrian had locked the side door and cut the landline before leaving.
My phone was inside, smashed under his boot.
My heels were gone somewhere near the porch steps.
The divorce papers were still on the kitchen table.
So were the custody papers.
So was the document he had shoved in front of me with a pen and a smile.
Emergency maternal waiver.
Full travel permission.
Trust fund transfer.
All of it prepared before dinner.
All of it waiting for my signature.
He thought the blizzard would frighten me into signing.
He thought Lily’s name would break me.
He thought being alone on the mountain would make me choose survival over motherhood.
But he did not know what I had written across the final page.
REFUSED.
I had refused everything.
The snow cut across my face.
My knees weakened.
I tried to step toward the tree line, but my body failed before my will did.
I slipped on the icy porch and slammed into the railing.
Pain shot through my hip.
My fingers clawed the wood.
I thought of Lily’s little hand in mine that morning.
Her warm cheek.
Her sleepy voice.
Mommy, don’t let Daddy take me without you.
I had kissed her forehead and promised.
Now Adrian was racing toward Pine Lodge where he had hidden her with a nanny.
A nanny I had warned.
A nanny who knew not to open the door if he arrived without me.
The storm roared louder.
Then a man’s voice broke through it.
“Evelyn!”
A figure burst from the side trail, moving fast through the snow.
Dark winter jacket.
Rescue pack.
Flashlight in one hand.
Mason Reed.
The mountain guide Adrian had fired that afternoon for asking why I looked frightened.
He reached me just as my fingers slipped from the railing.
He grabbed both my arms and pulled me upright.
His face was hard with urgency.
“Evelyn, get inside—move now.”
I looked toward the tracks disappearing into the forest.
My teeth chattered so badly I could barely speak.
“He’s going for Lily.”
Mason’s eyes changed.
Not surprise.
Confirmation.
He wrapped his coat around my shoulders and dragged me toward the cabin door.
I looked once more into the dark where my husband had vanished with his mistress.
Tears froze on my cheeks.
May you like
But something in me stopped begging.
“This isn’t over.”
