PART 5
Adrian never liked locked doors unless he was the one holding the key.
At Pine Lodge, the locked suite door made him look ordinary.
A father denied entry.
A man shouting in a hallway.
A husband whose wife’s lawyer knew too much.
Sienna stood behind him, snow melting from her white sleeves onto the carpet.
Her confidence was failing faster than the weather.
“You said she signed.”
Adrian turned.
“Not now.”
“You said Lily was legally coming with us.”
He glared at her.
“Do you want the life I promised you or not?”
That silenced her.
For a moment.
Then Lily cried from inside the suite.
“Mommy!”
The sound changed Sienna’s face.
Not into kindness.
Into discomfort.
Children make ugly plans harder to romanticize.
The lodge manager, Mr. Ellis, stepped into the hallway with two staff members behind him.
“Mr. Hartwell, sheriff’s deputies are on their way.”
Adrian turned on him.
“I pay more in one weekend than this place makes in a month.”
Mr. Ellis swallowed.
Then straightened.
“Not enough to make me open a child’s door without her mother.”
Inside the room, Harper whispered to Lily.
“Stay behind me.”
Lily held her rabbit and cried into its ears.
Adrian reached for his phone.
Before he could make a call, red and blue lights flashed through the hallway windows.
Deputies entered from the side stairwell, coats white with snow.
Deputy Carver led them.
“Adrian Hartwell?”
Adrian’s expression changed instantly.
Smooth again.
Controlled.
“Yes, officer.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“My wife is having a breakdown.”
Deputy Carver looked at the locked door.
“Where is your wife?”
Adrian hesitated.
That was the first crack.
Then the buzz of a small motor rose outside.
Everyone turned.
Through the glass entry, Mason’s emergency sled emerged from the blizzard.
He stopped so hard the runners scraped across the ice.
I climbed off before he could help me.
My legs nearly failed.
He caught my arm.
I pulled free because I wanted Adrian to see me standing.
Snow covered my hair, my coat, my eyelashes.
My black dress was ruined.
My feet shook inside borrowed boots.
But I was there.
Adrian stared.
For one second, real fear crossed his face.
The dead do not arrive with witnesses.
I walked through the lodge doors.
Lily screamed from inside the suite.
“Mommy!”
My heart shattered and rebuilt itself in the same breath.
“I’m here, baby.”
I looked at Deputy Carver.
“My daughter is behind that door.”
“I did not authorize him to remove her.”
“I refused every paper he gave me.”
Mason handed the deputy the sealed evidence pouch.
“Camera footage.”
“Custody documents marked refused.”
“Satellite call record.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“She’s confused.”
I turned to him.
The hallway went silent.
“No, Adrian.”
My voice was low.
“You left confused back at the cabin.”
Then I looked at Harper through the door.
“It’s me.”
The lock turned.
The door opened.
Lily ran out and threw herself into my arms.

I dropped to my knees and held her so tightly that I forgot the cold.
For the first time that night, Adrian was the one outside the circle.
