PART 6

Miriam did not let the silence breathe for long.

She never did.

Silence can help the innocent think.

It helps the guilty build stories.

“What did you do with the estate money, Grant?”

He turned to her with a look of contempt that belonged to another era.

“This is a marital matter.”

“No,” Miriam said.

“The moment you attempted to drug my client while coercing her signature, this became a criminal matter with a financial appendix.”

One of the officers almost smiled.

Grant saw that and hated it.

His power had always depended on rooms laughing with him, not at him.

Sienna dropped into a dining chair as if her legs could no longer hold her.

She looked at Grant with raw fear now.

Not love.

Not alliance.

Fear.

That told me she did not know everything.

Good.

Grant had always believed secrecy was strongest when shared unevenly.

Give each person only enough truth to keep them useful.

Starve them of the rest.

He had done it to me for years.

Now I watched him drown in his own method.

Miriam opened another folder from her briefcase.

“Before I came here,” she said, “I received a message from Evelyn asking me to pull a same-day audit from Whitmore Holdings.”

Grant’s head snapped up.

“You had no right.”

Miriam ignored him and read from the file.

“Three transfers.”

“Two from estate reserve accounts.”

“One from Lily Whitmore’s education trust.”

The room turned cold.

I stared at Grant.

At first, I genuinely could not speak.

Lily’s trust.

Not even his own child had been sacred.

Grant lifted his chin.

“It was temporary.”

I found my voice again.

“You stole from our daughter.”

“It was a loan.”

“To whom?”

His silence answered.

Sienna whispered, “Grant?”

Miriam looked at her.

“Did you know about the trust transfer?”

Sienna shook her head violently.

“I thought he bought the apartment with a bond release.”

Miriam’s gaze returned to Grant.

“The Paris apartment?”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

There was always something worse under the first betrayal.

Grant’s face hardened.

“I was going to replace it.”

“With what?”

He said nothing.

“Your mistress’s pregnancy announcement?”

Still nothing.

The officer nearest the table wrote something in his notebook.

Grant noticed.

He noticed everything now.

The law had finally entered the room and started taking notes.

He turned back to me and shifted tactics again.

His voice softened.

“Evelyn.”

That voice used to work.

That voice once convinced me to forgive hotel bills, late-night calls, a hidden phone, and a bruise on my wrist I had explained away as clumsiness.

That voice was dead to me now.

“I made mistakes.”

“No,” I said.

“Mistakes are when someone forgets an anniversary.”

“This was an operation.”

Sienna stared at him.

“A Paris apartment?”

Grant ignored her.

That, more than anything, shattered her.

She had carried his child and still had not been trusted with the full map.

She stood abruptly.

“You said once the divorce was done, everything would be mine too.”

Miriam let out a low breath.

There it was.

The greed beneath the romance.

Grant snapped, “Sit down.”

She did not.

Instead, she looked at me with wild, miserable eyes.

“He said you were cold.”

“He said you only loved the estate.”

I almost pitied her.

Almost.

Then I remembered her hand tipping poison into my glass.

“He was wrong about many things tonight,” I said.

Grant’s voice rose for the first time.

“Enough.”

Cyrus startled in my arms.

The officers moved subtly closer.

Grant saw that too.

He forced his tone back down.

Then he said the sentence that finished him.

“If she had just signed, none of this would have become ugly.”

The room went still.

Miriam looked at the officers.

“You all heard that.”

They had.

And so had the cat.

And so had the walls.

And so had I.

Some confessions are shouted.

The worst ones are spoken like complaints.
