PART 1

“My husband’s mistress poisoned my champagne… but she forgot my Persian cat was recording everything.”

Sienna Vale smiled as she leaned over the crystal bucket and tilted the champagne bottle toward my glass.

From where I sat at the head of my own dining table, I could see everything in the antique mirror behind her.

The soft gold light caught the thin stream of clear liquid she slipped from a tiny silver vial into the bubbling champagne.

She thought the reflection would hide it.

She forgot I had spent twelve years learning how to survive in a house where lies were served on silver trays.

“Drink it, Evelyn.”

Her voice was smooth and sweet.

“You look tense.”

Across the room, my husband, Grant Whitmore, sat at the grand piano and pressed one wrong note with stiff fingers.

He never played when he was nervous.

He played when he was pretending not to be.

Then he rose, carrying the same charm he used on investors, reporters, and women foolish enough to think they were special.

He came toward me with a stack of legal papers in one hand and a smile in the other.

“Just sign the papers.”

I looked at him.

At the man who had once sworn he would rather die than betray me.

At the man now standing in my dining room with his pregnant mistress, trying to drug me into signing away control of the Whitmore estate.

Under the table, my Persian cat, Cyrus, brushed against my ankle.

His emerald collar blinked once.

Grant never noticed the tiny hidden lens on that custom collar.

He had laughed when I commissioned it after a burglary scare last winter.

He called it ridiculous.

He said no one would ever try to steal from inside our house.

He had been right only about the direction.

Sienna lifted my glass and set it closer to my hand.

Her bracelet chimed softly against the stem.

“If this divorce is going to happen tonight, we should at least do it elegantly.”

I did not touch the glass.

Instead, I traced the edge of the napkin beside my plate and let my face remain perfectly calm.

“Is that what this is?”

Grant’s smile thinned.

“This is mercy.”

I nearly laughed.

Mercy.

That was the word cruel people used when they wanted applause for not being worse.

Cyrus jumped lightly onto the empty chair beside me.

His fur was moon-white under the chandelier.

He turned his head slowly toward Sienna.

The collar lens pointed directly at her wrist.

At the vial.

At the glass.

At everything.

Sienna noticed him and rolled her eyes.

“That cat hates me.”

“No,” I said quietly.

“He just has instincts.”

Grant placed the papers on the table and tapped the signature line.

“You have two choices tonight, Evelyn.”

His voice dropped.

“Sign now and keep your dignity.”

“Or fight me and lose everything.”

I looked down at the papers.

Temporary transfer of estate authority.

Emergency medical waiver.

Divorce settlement.

Trust modifications.

Every page had been prepared in advance.

Every lie was polished.

Every trap was waiting.

And suddenly, I understood something that made my blood run colder than the poison in the glass.

This was not impulsive.

This was planned.

The champagne was only there in case I refused.

I lifted my eyes to Sienna.

Her smile deepened.

Grant thought I was cornered.

Sienna thought I was too stunned to think.

But beneath the table, Cyrus shifted again.

The little green light on his collar blinked once more.

Still recording.

Still watching.

Still giving me the one thing Grant had spent years trying to take from me.

Proof.

I placed my fingertips on the stem of the poisoned glass.

Then I smiled back at Sienna.

May you like

And for the first time that night, her confidence flickered.
