part 5

PART 5
Miriam placed the tablet on the dining table where Grant had laid out the divorce papers.
How fitting, I thought.
Let the truth sit exactly where the trap had been prepared.
The officers stood to either side.
Harris and Elena remained near the doorway.
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them had any intention of forgetting what they were about to hear.
Sienna clasped her hands so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
Grant stood rigid near the piano, trying to maintain the posture of a man still in control.
He had not yet accepted that the room no longer belonged to him.
Miriam tapped the screen.
The first footage appeared.
A low-angle view from Cyrus’s collar.
The dining room from beneath table height.
Shoes.
Chair legs.
Silk hems.
Then Sienna’s hand entered frame.
Her bracelet glittered.
Her fingers held the tiny silver vial.
The clear drops fell into the champagne flute.
Even without sound, it was devastating.
With sound, it was fatal.
“Drink it, Evelyn.”
The room seemed to shrink around the words.
Sienna closed her eyes.
Grant did not move.
The footage continued.
Grant’s voice came next.
“Just sign the papers.”
Then mine.
“No.”
Miriam paused and looked at Grant.
“That alone is ugly.”
Then she pressed play again.
The camera caught everything.
Sienna whispering, “Once she’s calm, she’ll sign.”
Grant answering, “She won’t remember enough to fight it.”
One of the officers looked up sharply.
I did not.
I already knew Grant capable of this.
What hurt was hearing how ordinary he made it sound.
Like theft.
Like sedation.
Like my life and mind were paperwork inconveniences.
The video rolled forward.
Grant saying, “Tomorrow I’ll tell the board Evelyn agreed to step back.”
Sienna laughing softly.
“And Lily?”
Grant answered without hesitation.
“She’ll go where I say.”
My breath left my body for a second.
There it was.
Not just betrayal.
Not just attempted poisoning.
The confession.
He was never planning a divorce.
He was planning an erasure.
Miriam stopped the footage.
Nobody spoke.
Cyrus purred in my arms.
The sound was absurdly gentle in a room full of ruin.
Grant found his voice first.
“This is out of context.”
Miriam looked at him.
“You poisoned your wife in context?”
Sienna began crying.
“I didn’t want to kill her.”
The officer nearest her said, “That was a terrible sentence to say out loud.”
Sienna covered her face.
Grant stepped toward her.
“You idiot.”
I looked at him.
That was what he had for her.
Not grief.
Not horror.
Not shame.
Only anger that she had cracked before he could reshape the story.
He turned to me next.
“Evelyn, listen to me.”
“No.”
My voice was quieter than his, but it stopped him more effectively than a scream.
“You listened to me for twelve years,” he said.
“I listened to your lies.”
“That isn’t the same.”
He ran one hand through his hair.
His mask was tearing now.
“You don’t understand what the board was going to do.”
I almost laughed.
“The board?”
“You poisoned me because of the board?”
He hesitated.
Wrong move.
Miriam caught it too.
“What exactly was the board going to do, Grant?”
His silence answered faster than words.
He had already done something.
Not just planned theft.
Committed it.
And suddenly, I understood why tonight had been so desperate.
The divorce papers were not the beginning of his escape.
May you like
They were the cover-up.
