PART 7

The recording was not played for the entire ballroom.

Julia refused that.

She did not want her fear turned into entertainment.

Instead, Martin called an emergency board meeting in the private library behind the gala hall.

Only the foundation trustees, Trooper Marsh, Julia, Cameron, and legal counsel were present.

Sloane was not invited.

She waited outside with one hand on her stomach and the face of a woman hearing her future crack from behind closed doors.

Inside the library, rain streaked the tall windows.

Cameron stood near the fireplace, furious.

“This is absurd.”

Julia sat beneath a portrait of her father.

For the first time that night, she felt less alone.

Trooper Marsh played the recording from the official copy.

Cameron’s voice filled the room.

Sign before we reach the bridge.

Then Sloane’s.

Make her understand, Cameron.

Then Julia.

No.

Then Cameron again.

You are not walking into that gala as my wife unless you sign away the house, the accounts, and any claim to the foundation.

One trustee covered her mouth.

Another looked down.

Martin’s face turned red with contained rage.

The recording continued.

You think anyone will believe you over me tonight?

They are waiting to applaud me.

You will sign.

Or by the time we reach the bridge, you will understand what it means to make me angry.

Trooper Marsh stopped the playback.

No one spoke.

Cameron looked around the room.

His charm reached for a place to land.

There was none.

Finally he said, “It sounds worse than it was.”

Julia looked at him.

That was the sentence abusers use when the truth finally gets audio.

Martin stood.

“The award is canceled.”

Cameron’s face went white.

“The foundation will also suspend all pending access reviews involving you.”

Cameron stepped forward.

“You cannot do that.”

Martin opened a folder.

“Actually, Leonard made sure we could.”

Julia looked up.

“My father?”

Martin’s expression softened.

“Your father worried that Cameron might try to use divorce pressure to obtain foundation control.”

Julia stared.

“He knew?”

“He suspected.”

Martin placed a document before her.

“Six months before he died, Leonard added a coercion clause to the foundation bylaws.”

Julia’s hands trembled.

She read the highlighted section.

Any transfer of authority, spousal waiver, or foundation access document executed under threat, intimidation, marital pressure, or pending dissolution shall be considered void and trigger immediate protective review.

Julia pressed one hand to her mouth.

Her father had protected her after death.

Not perfectly.

Not soon enough to stop the drive.

But enough to stop the theft.

Cameron laughed bitterly.

“He never trusted me.”

Martin looked at him.

“Correct.”

That single word wounded Cameron more deeply than any speech.

Trooper Marsh stepped closer.

“Mr. Hartwell, we need to continue this conversation outside.”

Cameron turned to Julia.

“You planned this.”

She stood.

“No.”

“You planned this.”

She held up the key fob.

May you like

“I survived it.”

Continue to PART 8 to see Cameron escorted out of the gala, Sloane confront Julia, and the foundation announce the truth without turning Julia’s pain into spectacle.
