PART 6

Cameron walked into the ballroom wearing a smile that had survived worse rooms than this one.

That was his gift.

He could rearrange his face faster than other people could rearrange facts.

He lifted one hand to the guests.

“Sorry for the delay.”

His voice carried easily.

“Minor traffic issue in the storm.”

Julia stood near her father’s portrait.

She did not move.

The troopers remained near the doors.

That damaged Cameron’s story before it reached the first table.

Martin stepped onto the stage before Cameron could.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we will be delaying the award presentation.”

Murmurs spread.

Cameron’s smile tightened.

“Martin, that won’t be necessary.”

Martin looked down at him.

“It is.”

The room shifted again.

Cameron turned toward Julia.

“Can we speak privately?”

Julia held his gaze.

“No.”

The word was becoming easier.

Sloane stood near the bar, one hand on her stomach.

Her face was pale.

Cameron saw her and gave a tiny shake of his head.

Stay quiet.

Julia saw it too.

She wondered how many women had been managed by the same small gestures.

How many lies had fit between Cameron’s eyes and another person’s fear.

He stepped closer.

“Julia, you are emotional.”

That was the wrong sentence.

She laughed once.

Not loudly.

But the sound cut.

“I was emotional in the SUV.”

She lifted the divorce papers.

“Now I am documented.”

A few people gasped.

Martin turned fully toward her.

Cameron’s voice dropped.

“Do not do this.”

Julia looked around the ballroom.

At donors who had praised him.

At board members who tolerated him.

At men who borrowed her father’s name while ignoring his warnings.

Then she held up the signature page.

“Cameron asked me to sign these before we reached the bridge.”

Sloane whispered, “Cameron.”

He turned on her.

“Don’t.”

Julia continued.

“He said I would sign away the house, foundation access, and marital property before arriving here.”

Cameron laughed sharply.

“This is a private matter.”

“No,” Julia said.

“It became public when you drove me here to use this gala as your cover.”

Martin took the papers from her.

He looked at the signature line.

His face changed.

He read aloud.

“Under duress.”

The phrase moved through the ballroom.

Under duress.

People repeated it in whispers.

Sloane stepped away from the bar.

“You told me she agreed.”

Cameron glared at her.

“You said you were separated already.”

His silence betrayed him.

Julia looked at Sloane.

“He lies in sequence.”

Sloane’s face crumpled.

Maybe from betrayal.

Maybe from fear.

Maybe from realizing the man she thought she had won had been building his new life on the ruins of a threat.

Trooper Marsh entered the ballroom behind Cameron.

He walked directly to Julia.

“Mrs. Hartwell.”

The room quieted.

Cameron’s face went rigid.

Trooper Marsh continued.

“We have secured the vehicle recording.”

Julia nodded.

“Thank you.”

Cameron snapped, “That recording was taken without my consent.”

Trooper Marsh looked at him.

“You were in her vehicle.”

The ballroom heard every word.

Julia looked at Cameron.

He had forced her into the SUV because he believed speed, rain, and fear would give him control.

Instead, all three had carried his threats straight into evidence.

Continue to PART 7 to see the recording played for the foundation board, Cameron lose the award, and Julia’s father’s final safeguard come to light.
