PART 6
Margaret grabbed the doorframe as if the house might physically keep her upright.
“This is ridiculous.”
Her voice cracked.
“You can’t just remove me.”
Naomi stepped onto the porch.
“Actually, we can begin the legal removal process today.”
Margaret pointed at Lauren.
“She is my daughter-in-law.”
“That does not grant you property rights.”
“She abandoned this house for months.”
“She was deployed,” General Hale said.
The way he spoke that word made Margaret shrink.
Deployed.
Not absent.
Not lazy.
Not useless.
Serving.
Lauren watched the word land where her own explanations never had.
Margaret’s face twisted.
“She never acted like family.”
Ethan finally moved.
“Mom, stop.”
She turned on him.
“No.”
“She brought police to humiliate me.”
Lauren looked at him.
“And what did she bring to humiliate me?”
Ethan’s eyes dropped to her burned shoulder.
The question destroyed him quietly.
He had no answer.
One officer stepped forward.
“Mrs. Sterling, we need to speak with you regarding the assault report filed last night.”
Margaret recoiled.
“Assault?”
“I threw water because she scared me.”
Lauren’s eyes flashed.
“I was standing by the sink with a duffel bag.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
“She was trespassing.”
Naomi lifted the deed.
“In her own house?”
The officer wrote something down.
Margaret saw it and panicked.
“That is not what I meant.”
But the phrase was already out.
Trespassing.
Her own daughter-in-law.
In her own home.
Her lie had become too tangled to protect her.
Lauren climbed another step.
Ethan looked like he wanted to reach for her.
He did not.
Good.
He had forfeited that instinct yesterday.
Naomi handed Margaret a formal notice.
“This is an emergency revocation of permission to occupy.”
“You are required to leave temporarily while the court reviews the assault and property matter.”
Margaret held the paper like it was poison.
“I have nowhere to go.”
Lauren’s face did not change.
“Yesterday, you told me the same thing.”
“You did not care.”
Margaret looked stunned.
The echo struck her harder than any accusation.
Ethan whispered, “Lauren…”
She turned toward him.
“You watched her burn me.”
He flinched.
“You watched her throw me out.”
His eyes filled.
“I froze.”
“No.”
Her voice stayed quiet.
“You chose the easier woman to disappoint.”
That sentence hit him visibly.
Because it was true.
He had built his marriage on that cowardice.
Choosing Lauren to absorb Margaret because Lauren was disciplined, quiet, strong.
Because Lauren could take it.
Because Lauren always had.
General Hale looked at Ethan with cold disgust.
Then turned back to Margaret.
“Ma’am, gather essential belongings.”
“You will not delay this process.”
Margaret stared at the general.
At the officers.
At Lauren.
At the folder.
