PART 5

Celeste stared at the notice.

For once, she did not speak immediately.

She looked at Roland.

Then Vivian.

Then me.

“This is eviction?”

Vivian made a small broken sound.

Roland’s face turned red.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

That sentence had ruled my life.

You wouldn’t dare.

You wouldn’t dare embarrass your mother.

You wouldn’t dare let your sister struggle.

You wouldn’t dare say no to your father.

You wouldn’t dare let the family home fall.

You wouldn’t dare stop paying.

You wouldn’t dare choose yourself.

Tonight, I finally understood the trick.

People only say you wouldn’t dare when they are terrified you might.

I pulled another paper from the folder.

“It’s not eviction yet.”

Vivian lifted her face.

Hope is cruel when it enters a room too early.

“It is a thirty-day notice to vacate unless new terms are signed.”

Roland laughed harshly.

“Terms?”

“Yes.”

My voice stayed calm.

“No more unauthorized use of the property.”

“No more telling relatives this house belongs to all of you.”

“No more charging repairs, parties, or family events to accounts I fund.”

“No more using my name with vendors.”

“No more demands.”

Celeste looked at me like I had become monstrous.

“So you’ll throw Mom and Dad out because of my wedding?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I will remove them because they used this house to keep lying.”

“You just happened to announce the next lie over roast chicken.”

Roland stood again.

“You are my daughter.”

The words came out like a claim of ownership.

I looked at him.

“And yet you never treated me like one unless a bill arrived.”

Vivian sobbed.

“That’s not true.”

I turned to her.

“Name one time you stopped him.”

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Rain moved down the windows in long silver lines.

The silence answered for her.

Celeste wiped her tears angrily.

“I can’t believe you’d do this before my wedding.”

I almost smiled.

“Celeste, I didn’t do this before your wedding.”

“You planned a wedding inside a lie that was already ending.”

Roland pointed at the folder.

“No judge will side with a daughter throwing her parents out.”

I turned one more page.

“The trust judge already reviewed it.”

His face changed.

That was my favorite part.

Not because I wanted to hurt him.

Because it proved he had still imagined the law was waiting for his version.

I placed the court acknowledgement on the table.

“The ownership transfer is valid.”

“The notice is valid.”

“The financial documentation is already filed.”

Vivian whispered, “You filed it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The day after you told Aunt Marlene I was selfish for not buying Celeste’s wedding dress.”

Celeste looked away.

She had been there for that conversation.

Of course she had.

Roland stared at me with open hatred now.

It should have scared me.

Instead, it freed me.

Because love had not been in that look for years.

Only control wearing a familiar face.

I closed the folder halfway.

“I came tonight to give you one last chance to stop asking.”

Roland’s voice was cold.

“And if we refuse your terms?”

I picked up my coat from the back of my chair.

May you like

“Then in thirty days, you will finally understand what it costs to live in someone else’s house.”
