PART 8

Vanessa’s fingers shook around the folded notice.

For a second, I thought she might finally apologize.

Instead, she looked at Ethan with raw panic.

“What about the women from Raleigh?”

There it was.

Not shame.

Not regret.

Fear because the schedule was collapsing.

Lorraine stared.

“The women from where?”

Vanessa’s hand flew to her mouth too late.

I felt something cold move through me.

“How many?”

She did not answer.

Ethan looked as horrified as I felt.

“How many, Vanessa?”

She swallowed.

“Four.”

Lorraine shut her eyes.

“Dear Lord.”

I said nothing.

Vanessa rushed on, words tumbling now.

“They each sent a deposit.”

“It wasn’t that much.”

“I was going to make it a wellness weekend.”

“Yoga.”

“Wine.”

“A shell painting class.”

I almost laughed at the absurdity.

The shell painting class was what nearly broke me.

She had not only stolen my house.

She had redecorated its meaning in her head until grief became a package deal.

“And if I had not found the post?” I asked.

Her eyes flickered.

That was enough.

She had planned to arrive, unlock the house, and let strangers settle into Glenn’s favorite rooms while I drove down for my annual weekend and found my husband’s memory sold by the night.

Ethan stepped back from her as if she had changed shape.

“You said it was family.”

“It would have paid for the kids’ school camp.”

He stared.

“So you did take money.”

Vanessa began to cry.

Not the heavy broken crying of someone facing herself.

The angry crying of someone whose plan has gone wrong.

“It was supposed to help us.”

Lorraine whispered, “You used my name to make this look respectable.”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I thought if Mom came, Clara wouldn’t make a scene.”

There it was.

The real strategy.

Bring witnesses.

Bring luggage.

Bring pressure.

Arrive assuming my politeness would become permission.

I looked at her and felt no need to shout.

“You did not come here because you thought I would welcome you.”

“You came because you thought I would surrender.”

Ethan looked at me.

For the first time all afternoon, his voice was quiet and stripped of excuses.

“I’m sorry.”

I held his gaze.

“Are you sorry because she lied?”

“Or because I finally stopped making your life easy?”

His face answered before his mouth did.

Both.

That was honest, at least.

But honesty after damage is not restoration.

It is just the beginning of seeing the wreck.

I looked at the suitcases on the porch.

At the tote bags.

At the beach umbrella.

At the family vacation scene that had arrived ready to bloom into trespass.

Then I looked back at the three of them.

“This house is closed to all of you.”

Lorraine nodded immediately.

Vanessa stared at me in disbelief.

Ethan lowered his head.

The boundary was no longer abstract.

It had a porch.

A deed.

A notice.

And my voice behind it.
