PART 1

“She begged her mother not to send her back to her husband… then the doctor revealed the baby was gone.”

Clara was so light in my arms that I thought fear had hollowed her out.

Her torn yellow shirt clung to her skin.

Her cheek was bruised.

Her lip was split.

Her fingers locked around my shoulder like a child’s, even though she was twenty-eight years old and supposed to be safe in a marriage everyone had called fortunate.

The hospital corridor was too bright.

White fluorescent lights.

Cold tile.

Nurses running beside us.

A medical cart rattling behind.

A doctor shouting for a treatment bay.

And my daughter, my only child, sobbing into my neck.

“Mom, please… don’t send me back to my husband.”

The words did not sound like a request.

They sounded like the last thing left inside her.

I almost dropped to my knees right there.

For two years, I had told myself Clara was private.

Quiet.

Hard to read.

I had told myself rich marriages looked cold from the outside.

I had told myself Julian Blackwood was intense, not dangerous.

I had told myself my daughter stopped calling because she was busy.

Because she was pregnant.

Because she was adjusting.

Because every lie a mother tells herself sounds like hope at first.

I tightened my arms around her.

“Who did this to you?”

Clara’s eyes moved past my shoulder.

Terror changed her face before I heard his voice.

Julian walked into the corridor from the far end like he owned the hospital.

Expensive dark coat.

Perfect hair.

Controlled expression.

His shoes did not hurry.

That was what I noticed.

My daughter was bleeding and shaking, and he did not hurry.

“She slipped down the stairs,” he said.

The nurses slowed.

The doctor looked up.

I turned my body between him and Clara.

Julian’s eyes met mine.

For one second, I saw annoyance.

Not fear.

Not grief.

Annoyance that I was there.

That was when something in me began to wake up.

The doctor stepped closer with a chart in his hand.

His face had gone grave.

The corridor seemed to shrink around him.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said.

I still had Clara pressed against me.

Her breathing was ragged.

“What?” I asked.

His eyes moved to my daughter.

Then back to me.

“I’m sorry…”

He swallowed.

“We couldn’t save the baby.”

Clara made a sound I had never heard from another human being.

A broken animal sound.

A sound that tore through my body.

Her fingers dug into my coat.

I held her tighter as she collapsed against me.

Across the corridor, Julian lowered his head.

For one second, I thought he was grieving.

Then I saw it.

A flicker.

Small.

Fast.

Relief.

My daughter’s baby was gone.

And her husband looked relieved.

The corridor went silent around me.

The nurses froze.

The doctor stared at Julian.

I lifted my head slowly.

The mother I had been died in that second.

The woman who replaced her did not tremble.

I looked Julian straight in the eyes.

“You touched my daughter.”

My voice came out low and cold.

May you like

“Now I’m coming after everything you own.”
