Chapter 12 - LUCY DOES NOT WANT YELLOW

The sling bothered Lucy more than pain by Day Five.

“It’s itchy.”

“The sling?”

“Yes.”

“It is fabric.”

“Still itchy.”

Her orthopedic specialist confirmed the fracture remained aligned.

No surgery.

Sling for comfort and protection.

Gradual healing.

No playground climbing.

No jumping from furniture.

Lucy considered those instructions an attack on childhood.

Then the boots.

Police returned the right boot once it was no longer evidence.

The left remained retained because the concealed drive location mattered.

I offered new yellow boots.

Lucy screamed.

Not wanted.

Fine.

Red?

No.

Blue?

No boots.

We bought sneakers.

Rain came the next week.

She refused to go outside.

I almost said:

You love rain.

Then stopped.

Past preference is not obligation.

We stayed inside.

A child therapist, Dr. Amelia Trent, began seeing Lucy.

No forced retelling.

No:

Tell us about Wade.

Play.

Draw.

Body safety.

Choice.

Lucy put every toy adult outside the toy house.

All the children inside.

Dr. Trent did not interpret aloud.

Good.

Then one session Lucy placed a tiny plastic boot inside a toy mailbox.

“What’s that?” Dr. Trent asked.

“Secret.”

“Who knows?”

“Mommy.”

“Does Daddy?”

“Now.”

May you like

Lucy smiled.

That was enough.
